Visitors' Day out in Soweto

20 April saw a busload of donors from the ELB Ladies Club - who have been wonderful supporters of ACFS for some years – visiting our centres to see for themselves the work that is being done.

Our first stop was Pimville where a group of small children was waiting for their food. The ladies soon moved into the kitchen and assisted in the handing out of the peanut butter sandwiches and cups of milk. They learned about the process involved in enrolling children onto the scheme and were shown some of the family files.

Then it was time for some retail therapy as the ladies snapped up the lovely handmade items that were on sale - before moving out to look at the food gardens being tended to by the parents/guardians.

We finished off our stop by handing out some party packs and apples. Before we left the children sang the national anthem with their little hands on their hearts – which was a very special moment.

hspace=20The next stop was a mobile feeding van in Kliptown. This was the first time the ladies had ever been into an informal settlement and it was quite an eye-opener for them. More apples were handed out to the children as we watched the moms line up with their coupons and containers to receive their rations.

We then went on to Jabavu to see the vegetable gardens there.
Our final stop was Zola the malnutrition centre and crèche. The ladies were given a wonderful reception by the little ones who sang songs and nursery rhymes. The tots then had their lunch and our group handed out apples as they finished their food. We also enjoyed tea and sandwiches  provided by the ladies from Zola.

We were grateful to receive a generous donation from the ELB Ladies Group and we thank them for their care and support. Thank you Hazel;
Hazel 2; Gail; Nancy; Anne; and Carol.
