Celebrating hard work ... teamwork ... and great work

Every year in December we hold an evaluation day for the work done by our nursing sisters - together with the communities they educate. The purpose of the day is to assess the impact the ACFS is having and the effectiveness of the different programmes we run.

For example - we review skills development and the people who have mastered a skill; opened their own small business; or have been taken off our feeding list. We also judge community participation – how involved the communities are in their own development.

Annual exhibition awards
On 3 December 2009 all of the ACFS clubs around Gauteng gathered together to exhibit the work they’ve been doing during the course of the year and compete for the floating trophy. Judged by experts and officials from the Department of Health ... the Department of Education ... and the Food Gardens Foundation - trophies were awarded for first; second and third place.

In the category of Handwork - Tsakane Club won first place. The Meadowlands Club won first place for their Health Education lecture. These are lectures to mothers by a team of nurses – each club member explained what they had learnt and the club which had gained the most knowledge won!

Developing communities improving lives
Every month the ACFS provides food parcels supplemented by vegetables grown in the club gardens. Every club mother has a plot at our centres and they’re encouraged to also have one at home for food security. The Food Gardening trophy is awarded to the club which displays the best standard of planting; soil fertilisation; and harvesting methods - which this year went to Kagiso Club!

ACFS would like to thank all the participants who work so hard throughout the year individually and as a team to improve the lives of people in their communities.

And a big thank you to all our donors without whom this work and these awards wouldn’t be possible!
