A heart for the hungry in High School

Sound nutrition is a basic human right – and a right that friends like you help us ensure is upheld for the children of Gauteng.

Unfortunately malnutrition doesn’t only affect the under-12 age group. The government-implemented Primary School Nutrition Programme helps keep hunger at bay as best as it can for children in need during their primary school years ... but what happens when they get older and go to high school? They once again go to school on empty stomachs ...

No more empty stomachs
The ACFS recently partnered with a few good samaritans to assist these high school learners with daily hot meals. 2 050 young girls and boys in impoverished high schools around Gauteng are hungry no more! All thanks to Makro; Malibo Interprise; and Prem Rewat Foundation.

The ripple effect of these meals is that  school results have improved as well -  thanks to the children's increased concentration and learning capacity. These young girls and boys are attending school more regularly - and their teachers have noticed that they’re paying more attention. Their energy levels are better too.

Better school results
Learners now look forward to attending school – and it showed in their 2009 Matric pass rate of between 70% and 80%!

We’re grateful to be involved in helping future graduates get through their high school years without the burden of hunger holding them back. We only hope that more companies and good samaritans will open their hearts to high school pupils who go hungry every day.
